Selfless Giving

Audrey Martin of Bedford, Texas is no ordinary 8 year old.  She has learned the value of giving at a very young age!  Each year at her birthday party, in lieu of receiving personal gifts, she asks her guests to provide a gift that will go to a special charity.  This year at her 8th birthday celebration in August, she selected Newborns In Need - Dallas Area Chapter.  Audrey read about Newborns in Need in Parent magazine and reached out to find out what we needed here in our local chapter.  Audrey's friends got to have fun shopping for precious baby items and then Audrey got to open gifts of sleepers, onesies, hats, socks, booties, and bibs at her birthday celebration.

One of our cherished volunteers, Lee McNair read about Audrey in our late August newsletter and was touched to hear of Audrey's selfless act. In appreciation, he made her a special hat as a thank you gift and brought it to our September 7th meeting.  (Lee makes numerous high quality loom knitted hats for Newborns in Need each month.  He includes a yellow ring on each hat he makes that he says serves as a protective "halo" for each of the babies.)  Lee's special hat was presented to Audrey shortly after she arrived and she was surprised and delighted, especially after one of our volunteers explained that her hat included one of Lee's signature halos!

Removing packaging & tags
Selecting and packaging layettes

Audrey and her parents, Laura & Glenn Martin, brought the gifts to our September 7th work meeting and then stayed to help.  In addition to removing packaging from all the gifts they brought, the three of them participated in putting together the layette sets we take to Parkland each month and then stayed to help clean up and put away tables.  What a blessing to have their family join us and to see someone Audrey's age feel so good about giving!
